Happy Chinese New Year: The year of the Horse

Today is Chinese New Year. Is it celebrated in your part of the world?

Here in Melbourne, the Chinese New Year festivals are taken very seriously…

It's part of the old heritage dating back to the mid 1800s when many Chinese immigrants came to the gold fields to try their luck, and stayed to enrich the cultural mix of the young colony of Victoria.

So today marks the beginning of a 2 week long festival of fireworks, dragon parades, lion dances and exquisite food throughout the city.

Since my daughter came back from her teaching exchange in China last month, we have been inspired to eat more regional Chinese food. She has been making the most delicious dumplings, filled with fresh sweetcorn & sauté carrot, a recipe and technique she was taught in Guangzhou, and quite possibly the most delicious and unexpected filling. (Which reminds me, next time she makes them I'll take some images and post the recipe.)

But I think to celebrate the Chinese New Year, I will be giving this recipe for prawn-stuffed eggplant a whirl, and of course I am very much looking forward to going to the various festivities around town.

And I have a sneaking suspicion that it's going to be a very delicious weekend...
