Interior Architecture + Design Melbourne

When you walk into a building which I have designed, the last thing I would want is for somebody to recognise it as a blue fruit design.
— Virginia Blue

Blue Fruit is the studio of Virginia Blue, and with over 25 years experience as a commercial and residential designer, she has a formidable talent for listening, finding solutions and creating living environments which reflect's the owner's personality and lifestyle.

Design is not just
what it looks like and feels like.

Design is how it works.
— Steve Jobs

After graduating with a BA in Interior Design from Uni SA in 1991, Virginia worked in large architectural practices across Australia, always relishing the chance to practice design with a local flavour.

Working for the international architectural firms of Woods Bagot & Hassell, Virginia designed retail (David Jones, Myer), commercial (Commonwealth Bank H.O.), hospitality (Darwin + Adelaide Casinos), educational and public buildings (including lead Interior Architect for the Roma Mitchell Commonwealth Law Courts building), winning various commercial design awards.

From Darwin in the North to Adelaide in the South, and in the East Coast capitals, the huge variety of landscapes and lifestyles provided constant inspiration for varied architectural responses.

After a stint in London, Virginia returned to Australia and embarked upon Blue Fruit in 2004 to explore how residential building design can reflect both the user's needs, and the user's personality.

Based in Melbourne, Virginia designs residential projects both here and around Australia.

It is the opportunity for responsive design which challenges her. Virginia's designs are also inspired by the surrounding landscape and context. She prides herself that her buildings are not recognisable as a "Blue Fruit formula," but are more about bringing to life the dreams of the client, to create a space in which they love to live.

Currently studying a Masters of Urban Cultural Heritage at Uni Melbourne, Virginia is delving deeper into working with buildings with heritage overlays - a large proportion of her project base. From mid Victorian villas to post war Brutalist houses, she has a passion for working with older buildings to honour their origins - whilst making them exciting homes which work with our contemporary way of life.

When working on new house designs, Virginia focusses on playing with maximising sunlight deep into the layout, to create spaces of warmth and personality. Without a stringent style to constrict her imagination, but a preference for sustainability-focussed design, her new buildings vary to suit the client’s own personality and wishlist.

{Before the lightbulb moment of realising that design was her destiny, Virginia studied a BA in Communications Studies (Uni SA 1986) with a career in personnel and training.
As she says, everything in life is "grist in the mill" and the industry taught her the art of listening to people: a very important element in a successful client-designer team.}

Blue Fruit offers full scale design services, to take your project all the way from concept design, through detail design, working drawings & project management.

Interior Architecture relates to the floor & spatial planning of a building, including the structural elements of walls, floors, ceilings, windows & doors.

Interior Design relates to the joinery, lighting & selections of materials & finishes of the built elements. A final layer, of loose elements, such as furniture, artworks & rugs, can make up the complete design service.

Some clients prefer to engage Blue Fruit for some of these services, and some are more comfortable to have the full design service - it really depends on you, on your project, and how much time you want to invest in the project yourself.

Blue Fruit often works in conjunction with other design professionals, such as Building Designers, Architects, Landscape Architects, as well of course as with Builders, Trades and Wholesalers.

Through contacts in the industry, trade only items are offered to Blue Fruit clients.

Most projects involve alterations, renovations and extensions, and the scale can range from one room to a new house design.

A typical project would involve spatial floor planning, concept design for the house overall, detailed custom design of a new kitchen & wet areas (bathrooms, laundry) as well as selections for new floor coverings, window treatments, lighting & paint finishes throughout the home.
